Guard Your Heart

Picture
“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23

The ideal man is thought to have no emotions -- big and strong, no feelings, kinda stoic… Here’s one person’s description…. “Men are often characterized as spoiled, helpless brats utterly unable to perform simple household tasks, too stupid to remember anniversaries and appointments and completely unable to understand these strange female creatures and their hysterical emotions. We're base brutes ruled by our overactive sex drives who simply can't help being crass and immature, because that is the way God made us. Basically, we are mentally deficient lumps….”

The truth is that sometimes we like this stereotype because it gives us an excuse…

You are called to “guard your heart.”  Your emotions.  Your thoughts.  To guard something means you are attentive, take steps to protect… a few years ago when we started actively trying to make a difference in the lives of people in Sumas, including helping with resources, one of the surprising needs was lock boxes for prescription meds…. The need to guard the medications.  In the same way, our hearts need to be guarded, purposeful, deliberate.  If in your heart you find yourself constantly thinking certain negative thoughts, you have a problem, if you see yourself as inferior, if you find yourself giving into the same temptations and beating yourself up, you need to guard your heart…

“Guard your heart” the scripture says, for this is where the Lord gives life. It is truly life, because it bubbles up with tremendous trust in Him. “…the wellspring of life.” The Lord wants us to be excited about life, enthusiastic.  An enthusiastic heart will change your world, and the world of your neighbor.. A heart on guard for God deeply desires love for Him and your own life. A guarded heart will compel you to follow Christ through the best and worst of circumstances. Here is one person’s list (Boyd Bailey):

guard your heart from disbelief, so doubt doesn’t become despair.
Guard your heart from un-forgiveness, so anger doesn’t become bitterness.

Guard your heart from pornography, so lust doesn’t become lasciviousness.

Guard your heart from worry, so fear doesn’t become frantic.

guard your heart from pride, so your attitude doesn’t become arrogant.

A guarded heart increases the probability of good things from God. A guarded inward man makes for a good outward man.  Guard your heart, because the state of your heart defines who you are… not what others think, but what you think…. Another verse:

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

You are not alone in guarding your heart.  It is a gift from God for those who love the Lord.  Find peace with God first and you will discover peace with yourself.  Your heart is everything – change your world by becoming enthusiastic.  Wake up tomorrow instead of with worry and doubt, with expectation that God is going to enrich your life…

How do you guard your heart from being defiled by sin and disturbed by trouble? How do you keep your heart from raging out of control with irrational thoughts?

One simple way is using wisdom in what you watch... What you hear... Have you ever noticed the rumor mill in Sumas…. What you speak… Start looking for God around you, listening for God, and speak the things of God…

Ask God to be the guardian of your heart... A guarded heart, a heart of peace, is a candidate for greatness with God. Be on guard, and a wellspring of life will gush forth for God’s glory.  Amen.

Thought everyone might enjoy this photograph Champaghn posted of her son on Facebook.  Apparently Jorge enjoyed the food so much on Sunday that he decided he had to take a nap!
